‘Manichithratazu’ (1993)
Nearly a decade before India got spooked by Manjulika, the vengeful danseuse, Nagavalli, a venomous spirit gave the audience the shivers! Although this Fazil directorial was later remade into the Bollywood blockbuster ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ (and birthed a super successful ghostly franchise!) this is the OG. 30 years later, this psychological horror remains a classic, thanks to Shobana’s pitch-perfect performance!

‘Drishyam’ (2013)
Old is gold. Although this Mohanlal classic has been remade countlessly in several languages (including Chinese!), the original is still an evergreen watch, with a taut, engaging screenplay and nuanced performances from the cast, led by superstar Mohanlal (in his top form). The story explores the misadventures of George Kutty, an avowed cinephile, whose tranquil existence goes topsy-turvy when his daughter kills her harasser, who happens to be the son of the local police inspector. The Bollywood remake starring Ajay Devgn became a blockbuster. The movie will reportedly remade in Korean.

‘Bangalore Days’ (2014)
If fun, breezy coming-of-age dramas are your weakness, you can’t do better than this one! It features the charismatic (and ever-handsome!) Dulquer Salmaan, Fahadh Faasil, Naazriya Nazim and others. The plot is fairly simplistic - about the plot of a group of tight-knit childhood friends (and cousins) who navigate love, life, and career, as well as their bonds with each other.
