One in seven American residents is now foreign-born, ToI reported on September 24 citing latest data released by the US Census Board.

As per fresh statistics, as of July 2022, legal and illegal immigrants together account for 13.9 % of the total US population of 33-odd crore. This ratio stood at 13.6% a year earlier.

As far as immigration into the US goes, Mexico, China and India are the top three source countries.

Immigrants from India and China constitute 6% each of the total immigration count in 2022.

Mexicans continued to top the list at 106.8 lakh (or 23% of the immigrant population).

Afghanistan and Venezuela accounted for 4.07 lakh and 6.7 lakh immigrants, respectively. The rise in the number of immigrants from these two countries (229% and 22%) were significant compared to a year earlier, because of the increasing influx of asylum seekers and refugees therefrom.

As regards the bogey raised by some sections over the rise in number of immigrants, David J Bier, associate director of immigration studies at Cato Institute, a Washington based think-tank, points out that "the immigrant share of the US population rose just 0.3 percentage points from 13.6% to 13.9% from July 2021 to July 2022."

He adds that the rise in immigrant share of the population over the last decade (2012-2022) was the lowest ever.

It may be noted here that immigrants made up 13.1% of the US population in 2012, which has now risen by just 0.7 percentage points.

The growth in the immigrant share has fallen by 76% since the 1990s, Bier adds.

On the other side of the divide, the Center for Immigration Studies, a think-tank known for a hardened stance on the issue, highlights that the figure of foreign-born of 4.61 crore is the largest that the ACS has ever shown. Ten years ago, in 2012, the foreign-born number was 4.08 crore.
