Synopsis

Young investors in metros are favouring a direct approach to mutual fund investments. However, experts foresee big growth from smaller towns — places that will require distributors or someone to hand hold new investors. For now, the overall trend looks mixed. Chances are commission may fall, while advisory cannot completely remove human intervention.

Amit Kulkarni (25), a pharmaceutical executive, invests into markets through the direct route in mutual funds. He prefers to be on his own and avoids distributors. “By now I have sound knowledge of mutual fund schemes. I watch the markets, track my investments, do my research, and educate myself about the financial world. I want to maximise my returns by going directly. Why should I pay the distributor when I can do all on my own?” asks Amit.
