Nearly 26 years after the assassination of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, the US police have arrested a former gang leader.

Named Duane Keith ‘Keffe D’ Davis, the 60-year-old former gangster has reportedly admitted to participating in the drive-by shooting that claimed the rapper’s life in 1996.

Shakur was shot in a drive-by attack in Las Vegas. He was a guest at the MGM Grand Hotel, to see Mike Tyson box.

Tupac Shakur’s Death: The Gory Details

While returning from the boxing match, Shakur was shot, four times - on the arm, thighs, and chest. One bullet entered his lung. He was rushed to the University Medical Center at Southern Nevada, where he passed away due to massive internal bleeding after two weeks.

In a recent interview with CNN, Jason Johansson, the police department’s homicide lieutenant said that the murder was probably a “retaliatory attack”, a result of gang wars. Shakur and Marion “Suge” Knight, the former boss of Death Row Records, were affiliated with the Mob Piru gang in Compton, while Davis worked with the South side Compton Crips.

Although Davis had confessed to the murder, a decade ago, in 2009, he could not be arrested as he had a “proffer agreement”, told a police official to CNN.

A proffer agreement is a contract where an individual agrees to yield information but the statements cannot be used against the suspect.
