The transport department has issued a new diktat in the congested Bangalore city, making carpooling illegal. However, after the massive backlash, Karnataka minister in the Siddaramaiah government, Ramalinga Reddy, said there is no ban on carpooling; however, they need to get a license before working. Amid alarm by taxi drivers, carpooling is penalised in the IT capital of India; citizens can be fined up to Rs 10,000. The government has curbed citizens' efforts to reduce pollution and congestion.
